That really takes up the area. Would you mind raising the bottom a little so that there is a box underneath to hold equipment, life jackets, etc.?
I am a bit confused about this. What is the advantage of not just putting the boats in the truck bed and securing them?
The kayaks are quite wide, so if you lay them flat in the truck bed, they take up a lot of space. You would have to position one at an angle and nest the other on top, which could lead to the boats rubbing against the spray-in bed liner and scratching the hull.
The J racks hold the kayaks on their side at an angle, which takes up much less horizontal space. This setup also ensures that the contact points with the boats are soft and designed for this purpose. Plus, if the wooden frame is fixed to the bed, it offers additional tie-down options.
The concept here is that they will be absolutely safe and you could drive on the highway with them, but I would be interested to see specifics of how you tie them down real photographs.
One strap goes through the tie-downs at the front of the boat, and another strap goes through the loops at the back. I will take some pictures next time, I didn’t realize I was doing anything unusual.
I do have some small ratchets, so I am definitely curious. Is there any risk of the wind catching them?
