Ford Maverick - Good Decision?

Hey everyone,

I’ve always wanted to own a truck—preferably an F-150, Ranger, GMC Canyon, or Dodge Ram. However, my budget is currently limited, so I’m considering the Ford Maverick.

Does it provide enough space for four people?

My biggest concern is ground clearance. I live in Montreal, where potholes are everywhere, and I worry the Maverick might sit too low.

I have plenty of room in my Maverick. The seating is better than the Ranger, and you shouldn’t have any problems.

My 5’6” rather heavy-set mom sat in the back comfortably.

Back seats can be tight if the driver and front passenger need a lot of legroom. If you’re frequently driving with three or more people, you might want to consider a larger truck.

@Winter
I’m 6’0", and my son is 6’3"—he fits behind me with no issue. Unless we’re talking about really tall people, it should be fine for most adults.

No way, I’m 6’3” and there’s no chance I’d be comfortable in the back seat. The driver would have to be hugging the dashboard. My wife is 5’8”, and even with her driving, it’s a tight fit. The back seat is fine for kids, but not great for adults on longer trips.

@Kai
Fair enough—everyone’s experience will be different.

@Winter
If you need more space, go straight for the F-150. The cab size on the Maverick and Ranger is almost identical.

Compared to an F-150 SuperCrew, the Maverick is much smaller. The back seat in an F-150 is huge, while the Maverick is more compact.

For reference, I’m 6’0”, and my 5’2” wife and daughter fit comfortably behind me. If I try to sit behind myself, it’s doable but not ideal. That said, I’ve heard the Maverick has slightly more rear legroom than the Ranger.

For potholes, the Maverick should have decent clearance, but if you want a little more height, consider the Tremor package.

@Lennon
I got roasted for saying my 6’0" sons find the back seat uncomfortable for long trips. It’s fine for short drives, but two or three hours is a lot for them.

For the OP: I drove my Maverick through Montreal this summer, and it handled the potholes just fine. Big enough to avoid getting swallowed by them, but small enough to maneuver through tight streets.

@Lennon
The FX4 doesn’t add ride height, but the Tremor does (by about 1 inch).

The Maverick’s interior is about the same size as a Jeep Cherokee—a midsize SUV. I’ve had four adults in mine for a couple of hours without complaints.

It also has roughly the same ground clearance as a Cherokee.

Out of curiosity, what have you been driving through Montreal’s potholes until now?

@Miller
A Subaru Impreza. It’s rough, lol.

Impreza has 5.1 inches (13 cm) of ground clearance.

Maverick is 8.3 inches (21 cm). Ford Ranger is 9.3 inches (23.6 cm). Either one would be a big improvement.

@Miller
Just to clarify, 8.3 inches is the FWD model’s clearance. AWD models get about 8.6 inches, and the Tremor has around 9.4 inches—similar to a 4WD Ranger.

There’s plenty of room in the back. I took a road trip to Virginia with four people, and no one complained about space.

Also, it handles rough roads well—I regularly drive on poorly maintained city streets and back roads. But I have the Tremor, which sits higher and has upgraded suspension.

I’m test-driving a 2024 Maverick this Saturday to see how it feels.

Try both the Hybrid and EcoBoost versions—they handle differently. Also, keep in mind that the 2025 models might feel different, so if you’re not in a rush, consider waiting to test those too.

Ground clearance won’t be an issue.

Space-wise, four average-sized people will fit fine. But if all four are over 6’0", it’s going to be tight. The Maverick and Ranger have almost identical cab sizes, but the Maverick has slightly better access and egress.

An F-150 Crew Cab is a whole different class—huge, super comfortable, but unnecessary for most people. If you need a balance of truck capability and cab space, you’re kind of stuck between the Maverick and a midsize truck.

@Rowe
I’m looking at two options:

  • 2024 Maverick XLT AWD – $40,000 CAD (brand new)
  • 2023 Maverick XLT Tremor – $36,000 CAD (10,000 km used)
