So, I stripped a wheel stud, and Ford wants to charge me for the whole assembly, quoting me $185. But I saw online that a single stud is only like $5. Can I just replace the stud on its own, or do I have to buy the whole part?
Yeah, you can replace just the stud as long as you get the right size, length, and diameter. No need to pay Ford for that. Just grab the stud and the right tool to install it. Bang the old one out, pull the new one through, and you’re good to go.
@Charlie
I figured they were overcharging me for no reason.

They probably are. Up here in Canada, I can find a stud for about $7. There’s also a tool for $18 that uses your lug nut to pull the new stud into place. If you’ve got an air hammer or can get the old one out yourself, you’ll save a ton over their $185 quote.
That sounds like typical pricing. $175 for labor, $10 for the part.
Honestly, $185 isn’t terrible if they’re replacing the whole assembly. Depending on the car, you might need to remove the hub to fit a new stud anyway, and at that point, replacing the hub makes sense. What trim is your car?
@Cairo
It’s the XL Ecoboost AWD.
Some cars don’t allow for just replacing the studs. It’s all one piece, and you can’t maintain or repair it. I learned this the hard way when it ruined one of my plans.

Are you talking about the Maverick? A tire shop messed up one of my studs last year, and they covered the cost to fix it.
@Harlem
Is yours AWD?
You can replace just one stud, but it’s a pain and takes a lot of time. With the labor costs, it’s usually cheaper for the shop to swap out the whole assembly.
