Thinking about getting a truck… what are the pros and cons?

I’m looking for a truck I can use every day—something good for hauling furniture or taking trash to the dump when needed. I need a four-door truck that’s comfortable for long drives since I like to travel.

I’d prefer something on the smaller side, not too high off the ground, and I don’t need a huge bed. What do you guys like or dislike about your trucks? Any advice on what I should look out for while shopping?

I’m also considering the Ridgeline and Tacoma.

The Maverick has been great so far. Comfortable ride, good gas mileage, and the bed has been just the right size for my needs. Daily driving is smooth, and it comes with a lot of nice features.

The only things that bug me are the constant notifications on the dash when you start it up, and the windshield angle makes the rearview mirror a bit of a blind spot at times, especially at four-way stops.

@Monty
I installed a rearview mirror dashcam that works as a screen, so it eliminates that issue. Also added blindspot mirrors on both sides, which helped a ton.

Which dashcam did you go with? I’m thinking about getting one for my Maverick and another older car.

@Greer
The one I got isn’t available anymore, but it was similar to this [link]. There are a lot of good options out there!

I saw one for around $150. Is that about what you paid?

@Monty
I didn’t even think about the rearview mirror thing until you mentioned it, but yeah, it does make intersections trickier compared to my other cars.

Still, I love the truck. Rides smooth, handles well for a small truck, and the hybrid’s gas mileage is amazing. Super versatile, especially if you only need a truck occasionally.

@Monty
Not sure if higher trims have a different mirror, but I have an XL and flipping the mirror upside down actually helped with the visibility issue.

You can turn off the seatbelt reminders in the settings.

I haven’t been able to find that setting… where is it?

Same here, curious where that option is.

You can turn off the back seat reminder, but I think the seatbelt chime stays.

There is an option to disable it completely, just takes a little digging.

@Monty
Fun fact: the rearview mirror is double-hinged, so you can tilt it up closer to the windshield. I moved mine all the way up to the camera module (Lariat trim) and it helped a lot.

Good tip! I’m tall, so I always have to duck under it when turning right. Even a small adjustment helps.

There are a ton of posts on this already. If you play it smart, you can get exactly what you need for way less than other brands and with double the MPG.

Don’t overpay—inventory is getting better if you’re willing to look around. Not a lot of big discounts, but you can find them at MSRP if you’re patient.

Just got a 2024 Lariat for $2,500 under MSRP. Deals are out there if you look.

The Maverick is not even close to being on the same level as a Tacoma. Not a fair comparison.

Never said they were the same. Just pointing out the differences. Sounds like you’re a big Tacoma fan, and that’s fine, but in a lot of ways, the Maverick does better than the 2023 and older Tacomas.
