Which Tailgate Pad is Best for Hauling 2 Bikes?

I’m looking for a tailgate pad to transport 2 adult bikes to and from the local bike trail. I want a pad that’s easy to take off when not in use.

Can anyone recommend something good?

I use this one:

It works pretty well. Getting the straps under the tailgate isn’t the easiest, but I guess that’s normal for these types. I like that it only covers half the tailgate.

Himal Pad, costs 75 bucks https://amzn.to/3Oci48z

Best value for sure, but note that it does block the rear camera.

I got the Raceface T2 S/M from Amazon. It fits well, but if you’re hauling bikes, you won’t be able to carry much else. I’m thinking of getting a Kuat or something similar for more space.

It looks like the price went up by about $15 since I bought mine.

I use the Fox Mission half pad. It holds 2-3 bikes and installs in about 60 seconds after the first setup. Plus, it doesn’t block the backup camera.

I’ve had good luck with my Dakine pad. Be sure to check the size, you’ll need a S/M. It blocks the backup cam though, but supposedly there are pads that don’t do that.

I got the Fox Mission medium pad for my Ford Maverick, but they also have a 2-bike version that I think would work for you.

Pros: Easy to load and strap the bikes down securely

The back side is a soft felt, no scratches on the tailgate after a couple seasons.

It’s easy to take off, and there’s a metal loop to secure it with a cable so no one steals it.

Cons: Without a tonneau cover, it comes off too easily. Someone could steal it in under a minute.

The middle part blocks part of the backup camera, but I was able to adjust it for a decent view. This may not be a problem with the 2-bike version.

It does interfere with my tonneau cover. I had to adjust the position of it and remove the rear weather strip to make it fit.

If you want a cheaper, DIY solution – try a waterproof outdoor blanket (fleece on one side, tough fabric on the other, costs $20) and a strap. It does block the backup camera, but I’m fine with that since I saved $100-$200. Plus, I can use the blanket for other things too.

I went for the cheapest option I could find for my old full-size truck. I just fold the sides down so it fits my smaller tailgate. It’s been good for years and only cost me 60 bucks. Maybe the more expensive ones have extra features, but I haven’t seen anything special. It’s mostly vinyl and foam.

I bought a Hyper Tough one at Walmart for about $40.

It works just fine.

I use a Harbor Freight mover’s pad, and it cost me less than $10.

If you really want to take it off between uses, Tribe’s pad might be the way to go. It uses magnets and holds 2 bikes. Anything with straps can be a hassle.
