Why did you get a Ford Maverick and which engine is best?

I’m thinking about getting the 2024 Ford Maverick. The 2.0 AWD has a lot of power, but the hybrid looks good too, even though it has less horsepower (kind of odd since hybrids usually add more power).

Because I live in Canada, I’m leaning towards the AWD 2.0 for snow, but I’d love to hear what made you pick the Maverick over other vehicles and which engine you chose?

Are there any issues I should know about before buying?

I always wanted a truck but didn’t need an expensive one. Got the hybrid, and I love it.

I’ve got a 2022 Hybrid XL. I drive six days a week, a mix of city and highway, and I’m getting 40 mpg. Love this truck.

The 2.0 gets built faster—just a few months. But if you go hybrid, you’re looking at over a year to get one. That said, the hybrid’s gas mileage is amazing. The 2.0 is reliable too, it’s been around for over a decade. You’ll get 24-27 mpg combined, and on pure highway, it’s about 30-33 mpg, which is solid.

AWD is good if you deal with snow or ice often. But if you don’t need AWD, the hybrid is still a great option—it’s fine in the snow too. The extra cost for the hybrid pays for itself within 1-2 years depending on how much you drive.

Just a heads up—the 2.0 EcoBoost engine is known for coolant intrusion. It’s been an issue for years.

Ford has fixed the coolant issue. I’ve owned a 2015, 2018, 2020, and now a 2023 2.0 EcoBoost. None of them have had major problems. The older 1.5 engines had more issues with this.

@Orion
I’ve seen the 2.0 EcoBoost engines from 2020 Escapes starting to show coolant problems at dealerships. This engine is still risky.

I used to work at a Ford dealership. We replaced the 2.0 engines often because of coolant problems. Some were covered under warranty, but it was a known issue.

@Daryn
I pulled the TSBs, and the last one about this issue was from 2019. I’ve had no problems with my vehicles, but it might depend on where the engines are made.

@Daryn
The engines made in Spain had fewer issues. All Maverick EcoBoost engines are made there, so that’s good news.

I’ve got a 2015 Fusion with the 2.0 engine, and it’s been perfect—no issues at all.

@Hart
I get it, but just know that the earlier 2.0 engines were prone to these issues. There’s even a class-action lawsuit because of it.

Maybe I just got lucky because mine’s been solid!

I bought a 2022 XLT EcoBoost. I needed a truck for light towing and some DIY projects, but I also wanted something small and fuel-efficient. The Maverick checked all the boxes for me.

I’ve got a 2024 Maverick on order. My current truck gets awful gas mileage, and it’s too big for my needs. I ordered the 2.0 AWD XLT with the luxury package because I need something more comfortable and efficient.

@Kerr
It’s wild that cruise control isn’t standard on all cars in 2023.

I live in LA and have always driven hybrids. I love my Maverick hybrid—it’s perfect for city life.

Same here! I used to use a Prius like a truck, and now I finally have the real deal with the Maverick.
