Just got back from my first truck camping trip, and it was awesome! Packed up the Maverick for a trip to Tuscarora State Forest in central PA. Scored a Napier tent specifically for Mavericks from Facebook marketplace for just $50. Also picked up a roof box from there, which was super helpful for all the extra stuff. I set up an air mattress between the wheel wells with a full-size mattress pad on top, and it fit just right. It’s great that the tent works with the tonneau cover, bike rack, and roof box. Setting it up took about 30 minutes, even in the dark, which is pretty reasonable for a first-time setup. This is the perfect time to be camping in the woods!
Did you find out how the Napier tent handles rain? I’m considering getting one too.

I’m wondering about that too. It didn’t rain while we were camping, but there was some dew on the tent in the morning, and everything inside was dry. The tent doesn’t have a separate rainfly, so the tent material itself has to work as one. Since the tent mounts around the truck bed, it’s not likely to accidentally get wet from the fabric. I heard someone mention on a different forum that they had some leaks from the roof area, and they added a tarp over that spot. Not sure if that would be a problem during a rainstorm, especially depending on the slope of where you park. Maybe they just didn’t tighten it enough? If rain does get in, I’m hoping my tonneau cover helps keep the bed dry.
This made me decide to get one. With the points I earned plus the accessory discount they have until the end of October (code: REDEEM20), I got it for 25 bucks with shipping. Hard to say no to that deal! Thanks for the heads up, hoping it’s good.
@Paris
Awesome! Great use of your points, and you’re making a smart choice investing in something fun for camping. Have a blast!
Good for you! I see myself doing this in two years. I’m sure of it.
What’s your dog’s name? I think they’re adorable!

I love this idea! Now I’m thinking about trying something similar. Is there anything you wish you had done differently or would do differently next time?

I’ll keep you updated, but so far, I think it worked out well! I think the more you spend on a mattress topper, the nicer the setup will be. I went with a budget topper, but something like this would be a much cozier option.
@Eli
That mattress pad looks great! I always have back issues while camping, so something like that could really help. I wish I had that when I was in scouts, haha.
I’m definitely getting this tent!
How big is the tent when it’s packed up?

That roof box is such a smart idea! I’m definitely going to look into it! I was considering Napier for the Texas Ren Fair this year, but the year got away from me.

Thanks! It’s a Thule, specifically a 2-year-old Thule Motion XT size large. Found it on Facebook marketplace for a good deal, so keep an eye out there. They can be pricey new, but you can often find them used.
What was your mpg with the roof box? And which engine is in the truck?
What kind of wheels do you have? They look nice!
Why not just set up a regular tent on the ground?
