MPG... am I doing something wrong?

I’ve been lurking here for a while, and it seems like everyone else is getting great MPG, but I’m only getting 20-23 MPG on average. Is it just my truck, or is it something I’m doing? Lol. On long highway trips, I get around 23 MPG, and in the city, it’s more like 20-21 MPG. For reference, it’s a '22 XLT FX4 AWD w/ 4K tow. I keep up with servicing and tire rotations, so IDK what’s going on. We mostly drive in normal mode. Been thinking about using Forscan to unlock eco and sport modes, but other than that, I’m out of ideas.

P.S. I’ve tried all kinds of gas and now just stick with 91 octane. Also tested all the drive modes, but the difference was maybe 1-2 MPG. I’ve read other posts where people report 25+ MPG on similar setups in both city and highway. So, hmmm… maybe unlocking Eco and Sport modes could help since Ford didn’t include those in the FX4 package for some reason.

Are you sure you’re not comparing your MPG to hybrid owners? For the EcoBoost, yours sounds pretty normal. It won’t ever hit the 35-40 MPG that hybrids get.

Actually, I’ve gotten 37 MPG over 200+ miles and 35 MPG over 500 miles with an EcoBoost AWD tow package truck.

On a 2,000-mile trip, I averaged 31 MPG even at speeds of 75-85+. But in the city, I rarely get above 23 MPG.

You’re driving an AWD pickup in the city—can’t expect miracles, ya know?

Most of my driving is city traffic too, including stop-and-go rush hour, but I usually average over 27 MPG in my '24 XLT FX4. On mountain trips in Colorado, I get 29 MPG easily, even climbing to 10,000 feet. On the way back (mostly downhill), I once hit 36 MPG :raised_hands:.

I get around 25 MPG on my '24 XLT FX4 AWD. Are you using Premium gas? That might make a difference.

I’ve got a '22 FX4 and usually get between 20-24 MPG, depending on driving. But I’ve added a 2.5" lift and bigger tires (245/70R17), so that probably affects it.

@Hayden
Yeah, I stick to Premium gas. I think it helps a bit.

Same here—running a 93-octane tune too. :laughing:

Great minds think alike. :sweat_smile:

It’s probably both you and the truck, lol. I get about 24 MPG with my EcoBoost Tremor when it’s mostly highway, 21-ish in the city, and 22-23 mixed. You could ease up on the gas pedal for better mileage… but where’s the fun in that?

If you’re in cold weather and not driving a hybrid, your MPG sounds fine. The EcoBoost is only rated for 19 MPG anyway. :man_shrugging:

How fast are you going on the highway? Speed kills mileage. My '22 Eco AWD 4K tow gets 26.5 lifetime average. Summer driving gets me close to 30 MPG, but winter and towing bring it down.

Honestly, it might be driver behavior. Do you accelerate hard from stops? How often do you coast? Running climate control on high? I’ve learned to drive lighter, and it helps a ton.

Your highway MPG should be higher. Maybe something’s up—how long are your highway trips? Also, battery issues could affect it. Normally, you should see 30-35 MPG on the highway.
