Worth it to get 5 full size tires on an AWD Lariat?

I have been considering the Falken A/T3Ws in 235/65/17, though I haven not checked if a 5th would fit neatly in the spare tire compartment. They’re priced the same as 4 Falken A/T4Ws. Since I head into the mountains often, I think the investment will be worthwhile. What are your thoughts?

Remember that AWD tires should have approximately the same tread wear to protect the drivetrain. If you wear down all four tires by 50% and then damage the sidewall of one, you can’t just put a spare on the damaged tire. You will need to replace the other three tires as well.

To be honest, there is considerable height difference in tire sizes. Therefore, the wheels had 50% wear. Dropping the replacement wheels to a 225 would actually roughly equal the change in height if his present wheels were a 235. But when he replaces the others, he should still replace it. At that stage, the size difference is probably about 1/16".

Why wouldn’t you want the extra tire? I have damaged sidewalls and had to buy a new tire far too often.

If you really don’t have space in the garage, you can always store it outside, chained to a tree.

Why end at five? Simply aim for six and turn it into a dual

Man, that would be an option

The full size spare, I think, has steel rims.

The standard size wheel is 28.6 inches in diameter, while the full-size spare tire is 27.2 inches. A standard tire doesn’t fit properly in the spare tire compartment under the bed. You can still place it under the truck, it just won’t sit completely flush.
