Toyota has announced that its upcoming vehicles will include Nvidia supercomputers and a new operating system. What do you think? Will this be a game-changer or just another excuse to raise prices?
Great, just another way to tack on $10,000 to the MSRP.

They already charge for basic features like lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control on a subscription basis. Now they’re encrypting their systems to stop people from making their own modifications.

Ford would never! I added fog lights to my Maverick using Forscan and an F-150 headlight switch. No drilling, super clean!

Let’s be honest, Ford would absolutely do the same if they thought they could get away with it.
@Thayer
Wait, hold up… they encrypted their CANBUS? That’s insane.

There’s been a string of Toyota/Lexus thefts involving access through the CANBUS. Maybe this is their way of addressing it?
@Sloan
A lot of European manufacturers are doing the same thing. Even simple replacements like an LED assembly require buying a code from the manufacturer. Costs around $100 per code. It might prevent theft, but it feels restrictive.
@Sage
If it stops stolen parts from being resold, fine. But if it locks us into using only OEM parts, it’s basically Apple-level control. There needs to be some consumer benefit.
@Thayer
It sucks, but maybe it’s worth it if it solves the problem?

Even with the term ‘supercomputer,’ I bet this is just a GPU-powered ARM chip that’s not super expensive. It might actually replace some other hardware and bring better ADAS features—though they’ll probably stick those behind a paywall too.
I just want a simple, reliable car. I don’t care if it’s built with stone tools as long as it’s affordable.

This is why Chinese carmakers are gaining ground. People want cheap cars that look decent.
@Jensen
FYI, Chinese brands like Nio and BYD also use Nvidia chips. It’s not just Toyota.
@Jensen
Hyundai is also killing it with their designs. Way better than most Chinese cars and still affordable.

The Prius is still affordable when adjusted for inflation, and Toyota has nailed hybrid reliability. There’s even a recall on the new Prius for a door latch issue, but overall it’s solid.

Different markets have different needs. It’s not that complicated.
